After spending the morning getting high and writing music with his boys, Javi spent the afternoon obsessively checking his phone and freaking the fuck out. Quinn hadn’t returned any of his calls or texts. A war raged in his chest. He wanted to go to her little apartment, throw her over his shoulder and drag her home but figured that would end up on the internet too.

He and Quinn hadn’t decided on how to tell CT about their relationship, and though Javi wanted to do it sooner rather than later, he knew Quinn wouldn’t be too happy about him inadvertently spilling the beans without her knowledge.

Javi tried Quinn again, calling for what felt like the forty-seventh time. It rang three times before the penthouse door slammed shut, and the woman herself appeared in the kitchen.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Javi barked storming over to her.

“Why so serious?” Quinn asked. She pulled her sweater over her head, revealing a dainty white tank underneath.

Javi eyed the swell of her breasts for a second before remembering his irritation. “I’ve been calling you all day.”

Quinn readjusted her glasses. “I had a meeting with Dr. Peterson, then school, then Grayson, then I met with Kensie and Jamie for coffee.”

“Where’s your phone?” Javi asked.

“On silent, I guess.” She shrugged. Her voice was small, her eyes distant. He didn’t spend the last month hurdling over all her shit to end up back here.

“How can you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Turn your emotions off like that. They’re back. So what? We’ll deal, but don’t shut me out.”

“I’m not shutting you out. I don’t see how this will work. Your brother is right, whether or not you want to admit it.”

“You’re breaking my heart, Puddin’,” he teased, but there was an edge of truth to it. Fuck it, more than an edge, the whole damn cliff.

“I’m not saying we can’t be friends. I’m just saying sex complicates things, and sex with you is about as complex as the Law of General Relativity.”

“This is more than sex and you know it.”

“I know, I just…I’m here, and even though I know it’s a horrible idea, I want to be, and that scares the shit out of me because I’m the smart girl. I look before I leap, but with you…”

Javi took her face in his hands, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Why can’t we jump together?”

“What does that even mean?” she chuckled. Her eyes were glassy, but no tears followed.

Javi traced the shell of her lip with his thumb. “I don’t know, baby, it’s your metaphor. I’m just trying not to lose my girl.” Their eyes locked in the quiet of the kitchen. Words failed. Then again, they didn’t need words. They never did. They forged their connection in the calm before chaos, the stillness before sunset. It swirled around them every time they got close, right before it ripped them apart. It saturated the moment with a beautiful vulnerability, the hope that this time it would be different.

Quinn held his gaze for a heartbeat longer, then sighed and glanced around the kitchen.
